Audition Notice – Step into Hollywood

CAODS Members or prospective CAODS Members,

This is a fine time to be a member of CAODS. We have just had an amazing year! Back in June 2012, “Our Essential Musicals” was held as a one day tester project at the Theatre Royal. This was the first step in developing our new working relationship with everyone at the Theatre. It was incredibly well received and a joy to be involved in. Add to this, the fact that we have just concluded an incredibly successful run of “The Sound of Music”, which has received such high critical acclaim.

Obviously, we are very keen to continue to build on this momentum, our main production for 2013 will be “Singin’ In The Rain” (28 October – 09 November). This is a very exciting prospect indeed, though we realise it will involve a lot of hard work on the part of cast, crew and production team to make it successful. However, we have no doubt that between us we will create another fantastic show.

As well as the main production, Ian would again like us to produce a summer variety show. As “Our Essential Musicals” was such a success, this time he has given us a three night slot!
The show for 2013 will be entitled
“Step Into Hollywood ”
and will be held at Lincoln Theatre Royal on Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th July (2.30pm & 7.30pm, and Sunday matinee at 4.00pm).
Friday 5th July has been allocated for Dress/Tech rehearsals.

We really hope that many of you will want to be involved in this production, as it promises to be a lot of fun, and gives many more individuals their opportunity to shine (which is not always possible in big shows with limited cast requirements).

Auditions for this show will be held on Sunday 20th January 2013 10.00am – 2.00pm at St. John’s Hall, Lincoln

Current members do not need to audition for chorus involvement in this show, however for the purpose of planning we would appreciate it if you could let us know as soon as possible if you would like to be part of the company.

If you have any questions regarding auditioning, do not hesitate to contact the director – Heather Arnold.

For all you ‘Tap Fanatics’!

tapshoes300x204_tAs you are probably already aware – CAODS are planning a major production towards the end of this year following the successful two week run of ‘The Sound of Music’ in 2012.

‘Singin’ in the Rain’ will open on 29th October and run until 10th November 2013.

This show will not only require principals who can tap (amongst other things) but also a large chorus of tapping women and men (plus some non tapping chorus of course!).

During rehearsals for ‘The Sound of Music’, a number of people expressed an interest in wanting to learn tap, not only with a view to auditioning for the show but simply to “learn a new skill”.

So, we are proposing to start some tap classes on a Friday evening at St. John’s Hall lead by Jo Dewberry.  There will probably be two classes, beginners and intermediate levels, so you can gain as much out of the classes as possible.

Classes will be £4.00 each for an hour session, and will start at 6.30 to 7.30pm and 7.45 to 8.45pm starting Friday 1st Feb 2013.

CAODS paid-up members will be entitled to a discount of £1.00/session.

Following the opening classes, subsequent sessions will need to be booked in multiples of 6 weeks.
Further comprehensive details will follow when we can gauge the level of interest and potential attendance.

If you are interested (even if it only to learn a new skill) please let us know by email and advise which class you think you may be interested in, and how much tap you’ve done in the past.

You don’t have to be a member of CAODS to join in – we are keen to encourage new blood – so please share this with those who you think might be interested!

A hugely enjoyable production

This very popular musical certainly found great favour with the audience and the applause at the end of the show was richly deserved. The excellent set with a good lighting plot and sound effects posed no problems for the stage crew. The essential scene-changes took place smoothly and efficiently. Throughout this production the singing was very pleasing. I particularly enjoyed the harmony in the nuns’ numbers. All the principals were proficient both in their singing and acting abilities. Jo Dewberry [Maria], Simon Nicholson [von Trapp] and Kate Fenn [Mother Abbess] were especially notable . As anticipated, the children were quite delightful and the rest of the named characters and ensemble were strong in support. The show moved smoothly along telling the tale well with commendable accompaniment from the orchestra. This was a hugely enjoyable production.

Magical show wows crowd

Review – Newark Advertiser by Dawn Bond
Monday 29th October, 2012 – Lincoln Theatre Royal
The hills are certainly alive with The Sound Of Music at Lincoln Theatre Royal until November 10 as CAODS — the County Amateur Operatic And Dramatic Society — stage the hit Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

This lively production is full of feel-good songs, with the entire cast and orchestra putting in lots of energy and enthusiasm on Monday night.

You cannot beat live theatre, and despite a few technical hitches — mainly a tree that did not want to leave the stage but did get a round of applause when it was removed finally — this is a top drawer show.

Directed well by Antony Law, with great musical direction by David Williams and lovely choreography by Jo Dewberry, the show makes you want to Climb Ev’ry Mountain, sung dynamically and with lots of passion by Kate Fenn as Mother Abbess.

Jo Dewberry makes the part of Maria her own and excels in the numbers, The Lonely Goatherd, The Sound Of Music, I Have Confidence, and Do-Re-Mi, with some talented children in tow.

Simon Nicholson is a stern Captain von Trapp, who does everything in a military way. He has a lovely voice, especially when he sings Edelweiss.

Karen Ryan, Fran Shaw and Jenny Glennon make nice nuns, with their voices blending well in Maria with the Mother Abbess.

Andrew Wydrzynski provides the humour as Max Detweiler who is looking for choirs to enter a singing contest, while Sharon Sinnott as Elsa Schraeder is out to trap Captain von Trapp as her husband. The trio sing well in How Can Love Survive? and No Way To Stop It.

Zosie Jenks as Liesl is going to go far. Her duet of Sixteen Going On Seventeen with the blonde telegramme boy Rolf, played by Jamie Bendy, is a delight.

However, it is the children who are the real stars of the show — James Sprague as Friedrich, Lucy Wells-Cole as Louisa, Cavan Malone as Kurt, Martha Sanford-Casey as Brigitta, Katie Hutton as Marta and little Taylor Mitchell as Gretl, especially in Do-Re-Mi and So Long, Farewell.

Theatre to come alive with the sound of music

Published in the Newark Advertiser – 25 October 2012
Opens on Monday 29th October, 2012 – Lincoln Theatre Royal
The Sound Of Music

JO DEWBERRY heads the cast as Maria in The Sound Of Music.

The hills will be alive with The Sound Of Music — well the Lincoln Theatre Royal will be — when CAODS (The County Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) stage the hit musical there.

The show will be presented from Monday to Saturday, November 10 and will feature two sets of children, known as Bread and Jam, playing the Von Trapp children.

Taking the lead role of Maria is Jo Dewberry, a regular performer with the Newark Amateur Operatic Society (NAOS). She is also choreographing the entire show and has even found time to learn how to play the guitar.

Fellow members of NAOS taking part are Andrew Wydrzynski as Max Detweiler and Karen Ryan as Sister Berthe.

Other main roles are taken by Kate Fenn as Mother Abbess; Fran Shaw as Sister Margaretta; Jenny Glennon as Sister Sophia; Simon Nicholson as Captain von Trapp; Julian Winmill as Franz; Dawn Wilson as Frau Schmidt; Jamie Bendy as Rolf; Sharon Sinnott as Elsa; Alan Trevor as Herr Zeller and Tim Jenks as Admiral von Schreiber.

The children are led by Zosie Jenks as Liesl with James Sprague and Jamie Chatterton as Friedrich; Lucy Wells-Cole and Jenny Reeves as Louisa; Cavan Malone and Dexter Bickmore as Kurt; Martha Sanford-Casey and Amber Ackerman as Brigitta; Katie Hutton and Holly Timings-Thompson as Marta; and Taylor Mitchel and Charlie Newland-Shepherd as Gretl.

The director is Antony Law and musical director is David Williams.

Society chairman Paul Cobb, of North Scarle, said: “This is a real family favourite Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which makes you feel good while being rather sad and poignant at the same time.”

The show is full of musical numbers the audience would know, including A Lonely Goatherd, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, My Favourite Things, Eidelweiss, Do-Re-Mi and The Sound Of Music.
